GULL BATS ALIVE IN WIN OVER BANKS

The Seaside Seagulls picked up their first Cowapa League win and kept Banks winless in league with a 12-2, 5-inning victory over the Braves Tuesday at Broadway Field.

The two teams will meet again Thursday at Banks.

Down 2-0, Seaside scored seven runs in the third inning to send returning all-Cowapa League pitcher Todd Baggerley to the showers. Only two of the runs allowed in Baggerley's 3-inning stint were earned, as the senior righthanders allowed five hits and struck out three with four bases on balls.

Seaside added two more unearned runs in the fourth inning off sophomore reliever Jesse Hostynek, then ended the game with one out in the fifth with three more scores, capped by Ross Knutsen's bases-loaded single over the head of Banks left fielder Dirk Vredenburg to score Mark Thysell.

Seaside rapped out 11 hits off two Braves pitcher's, while taking advantage of seven Braves errors and six bases on balls.

"It was nice to be able to be at home and swing the bats like we did today," said Seaside head coach Joel Dierickx. "We didn't start out maybe like we should have, but the theme lately is just letting the game come to us and the kids played well today."

Mitch De Gandi, Seaside's only experienced pitcher currently eligible to play, went the distance on the mound for the win and helped his own cause by going 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs batted in.

"He did a great job today," said Dierickx. "On the mound, swinging the bat, you can't ask anything more from him. He's been an incredibly pleasant surprise. His tenacity on the mound is what we're asking for, because the other two arms we have to go to are sophomores."

Leadoff batter Will Beatty added three hits and three runs scored and sophomores Jeremey Carow and Dylan Peters, who will be called on to pitch Thursday at Banks, each scored twice.

De Gandi was a little wild, but allowed just three hits and struck out eight batters, including back-to-back K's to get out of a jam in the first inning. The senior righthander hit Braves leadoff batter Jacob Tijerina with the first pitch of the game, then threw four wide ones to Johnny Janisko to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Jordan Quinones lined out to Carow at short, before De Gandi rebounded to fan Brett Gooding and Tyler Grant back-to-back, both looking at 2-2 breaking balls, stranding the runners at second and third after they advanced on a wild pitch.

"That was great, too," said Dierickx. "We talked about that after the game. Sometimes you get this, 'Here we go again' kind of mentality. It's a pretty auspicious start when you hit a batter and the next four pitches you walk the next guy, so you've got two on, nobody out and their 3-4-5 hitters coming up. Those are the kind of things that have haunted us the last two weeks."

The Braves scored a run in the second on a walk, a wild pitch and a bloop single to center field by number nine hitter Clayton Edwards, scoring Alex Kronenburg to put Banks up 1-0. Edwards had two of the Braves' three hits, adding a shallow double to right field in the fifth inning.

The Braves added an unearned run in the third on Baggerley's RBI single, but squandered a chance to put crooked numbers on the board by stranding three runners on base with one out. After Baggerley's safety scored Jordan Quinones, who had reached on an error, Jared Herb popped out to the pitcher, who dropped the ball, but still recorded the out on the infield fly rule. De Gandi again used a strikeout to get out of the jam, fanning Kronenburg looking to end the threat.

"Nobody lost faith," said Dierickx. "We swung the bats with a lot of confidence, opened up a big third inning and from there we were able to relax and play some good baseball."

The Gulls sent 11 men to the plate against Baggerley in the third, scoring seven runs on four hits and a pair of Braves errors. Beatty, De Gandi and Ben Christianson all had RBI singles in the frame and Matt Mizell delivered a clutch 2-out, 2-run single to right field. A dropped fly ball in left field, one of three errors in the Banks outfield, put the Gulls up 7-2.

In the fourth, Will Beatty led off with a base hit, eventually scoring on an errant pickoff throw by the Braves catcher that hit him in the helmet and ricocheted into the outfield. Mark Thysell reached on an outfield error and crossed the plate on a double steal.

De Gandi delivered a 2-run single in the fifth, scoring Beatty and Dylan Peters, who each reached base on infield hits. After Ben Christianson's fly ball to right field fell in safely to load the bases, John Giztavich delivered the third infield hit of the inning and Knutsen drove a ball to the warning track in left field to end the game.

"It's nice to be able to have some arms," said Dierickx, "and have those two sophomores go to Banks and throw on Thursday."

Seaside improved to 6-7 overall with the victory, while Banks dropped to 4-7 with its fifth consecutive loss.
