LOGGERS ROLL OVER WARRIORS

Knappa and Warrenton may no longer be league opponents, but the rivalry lives on.

A large crowd turned out to enjoy the rare 75-degree sunshine and the Knappa faithful had the added pleasure of a decisive win, as the Loggers used a pair of big innings to blow away the Warriors 14-6.

"Coming into the year we thought scoring runs would be a big challenge for us," said Knappa head coach Jeff Miller. "I was surprised. I looked up the other day and we have scored more runs than anyone in the Northwest League, more than 200 runs. Credit to the guys. They keep working and have come a long way. They've learned to make contact and some of the big boys have really carried us."

Down 2-1 heading into the third inning, Knappa sent ten men to the plate and scored seven runs to take the lead for good. Then, after Warrenton closed to 8-4, the Loggers batted around again in the fifth inning, leaving the mercy-rule activating run at third base, but taking a commanding 13-4 lead.

"As long as there's a big purple "W" on the other side, it doesn't take much to get competitive and get out there and play the game," said Knappa head coach Jeff Miller. "Unfortunately, it's not league anymore, but it's still good to play them and it's always good to play a good opponent."

Gary Aho came out of the bullpen (center field, actually) to pick up the victory in relief of starting pitcher Karac Anderson, who left with one out in the fourth. Aho surrendered a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning, striking out five and walking two. Warrenton junior lefthander Michael Moore started the game on the mound, but could not get an out in the second inning and has handed the loss.

"They used up their top pitching on Friday," said Miller, " but their guys came in and battled and they scratched out six runs."

It was a tough day for the outfielders, as several catchable balls were dropped by both teams. Right field in particular was a danger zone with an intense sun field making it difficult to see the ball.

The Warriors took advantage of a dropped ball in right field and an errant catcher's throw to plate an unearned run in the first inning, before Aho evened the score with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Anderson, who led off the game with a single. Knappa had four hits off Moore in the first inning, but scored only one run, leaving the bases loaded when Dallas Oja grounded back to the mound to end the inning.

Warrenton regained a one-run lead on an RBI infield single by Dan Wolfe, who hit a hot shot ground ball that hopped up on Knappa shortstop Cody Strickland, allowing Mike Davis to score from third. The inning ended when Knappa catcher Joe Strickland picked off Chris Marks at third base.

It was a great day for the Strickland family as Cody went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and Joe was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and a pair of runs scored. Both players crossed the plate in a 7-run second inning, which started with a Nate West solo home run. The first eight Loggers reached base in the inning against Moore and reliever Mike Davis, with Cody Strickland contributing an RBI double and Aho driving in his second run of the day with a base hit.

Aho, who entered Friday's doubleheader against Portland Christian with a .631 batting average has only boosted it since, going 5-for-7 with three homers against the Royals on Friday and 2-for-3 with three RBI's yesterday.

"It's pretty much the best feeling I've had all season," said Aho, "besides hitting my three home runs."

Joe Strickland launched an opposite field, 3-run home run off Davis in the fifth inning, part of a 5-run Logger outburst as Knappa batted around once again. West drove in his second run of the day with a single and Anderson, Cody Strickland and Maury Dugan added singles.

"We've got four more games this week in league," said Warrenton head coach Lennie Wolfe. "If the score had stayed close, I would have brought my number one or two [pitcher] in, but when it got a little out of hand there, we had to resolve ourselves to the fact that if we couldn't tighten the gap we were going to have to finish with the people we threw."

"Buddy came in and did what he needed to do. He ate up innings for us."

Anderson went 3-for-5 on the day with four runs scored as the Loggers collected 15 hits, improving to 13-9 on the season, while Warrenton dropped to 15-4. With two league losses to Clatskanie, Warrenton's other non-league loss came to top-ranked 2A Nestucca, which currently leads Knappa's league.

While Knappa is off the rest of the week, Warrenton continues a busy schedule with a home doubleheader against Catlin Gabel today. The Warriors welcome Rainier for a key doubleheader on Friday then have a scheduled non-league doubleheader against Regis on Saturday at noon.
