ASTORIA SHREDS CHEESEMAKERS
The Astoria Fishermen teed off on two different Tillamook pitchers, while Matt Brause tossed another gem as the Fishermen breezed to their third straight Cowapa League win and seventh straight victory overall, knocking off the Cheesemakers 18-0 in a 5-inning game.
Astoria wasted no time as Brent Culver led off the game with a triple and scored the first of five runs in the opening inning. The senior all-state centerfielder also doubled and scored, finishing 3-for-4 on the day.
Once again it was new left fielder Adam Koehnke who did the majority of the driving damage, knocking in six runs with three hits on the day, including his first varsity home run.
"He seems to come up with the bases loaded all the time and put a charge into one," said Gasser. "He had a bases loaded shot that scored a couple of runs and then a three run homer."
Joey Dursse drove in three runs with a two-run single and a sacrifice fly and Jordan Poyer scored four times and drove in two runs with a double and a single.
Matt Brause cruised through four innings to pick up his third win, improving to 18-0 over the last two seasons. Astoria's ace righthander allowed just one hit and two walks, striking out nine batters. Brause also had two hits and an RBI. Hans Lund closed out the game, allowing Tillamook's other hit with one strikeout and added a double at the plate.
"Matt was in pretty good command of three pitches and did a nice job," said Gasser. "It was 11-nothing after two."
With Tillamook splitting its two games with Yamhill-Carlton last week and Banks struggling to an 0-3 start in league, Astoria is in a position where competition might be hard to come by before the playoffs.
"Our main opponent right now is setting high standards for ourselves," said Gasser.
"We need to keep ratcheting up and being a better pitching and defensive team. Our three losses we averaged about eight runs a game. We are going to hit the ball."
The two teams meet again Thursday at Astoria's Aiken Field. Sophomore Jordan Poyer is scheduled to get the start on the mound, with Nick Bredleau due to face Ilwaco in Saturday's non-league game against the Fishermen. Thursday's game will be broadcast live on SportsRadio 1230 ESPN, with pregame coverage beginning at 4:55 p.m.
