LOGGERS NO-HIT AT PC, FALL 10-0

Add Charlie Antal's name to the long list of standout pitchers in the new Northwest League (2A Special District 1 for baseball).

The Portland Royals multi-talented, but oft injured righthanded hurler tossed five innings of no-hit ball as the Royals hammered Gary Aho and the Knappa Loggers 10-0 in a mercy-rule shortened league game in Portland.

The contest was moved from Knappa to Portland due to standing water in the Loggers' outfield. The doubleheader rematch will now be played at Knappa in May.

Antal struck out six, walked one and hit one, allowing just three baserunners. He also became the first pitcher to put the collar on red-hot Loggers' junior Gary Aho, who only reached the plate twice in a quick game and grounded out to shortstop both times.

"Their shortstop [freshman Vance Downey] really impressed me," said Knappa head coach Jeff Miller, whose team dropped to 1-4 in district play with the loss. "A vacuum cleaner! The guy was outstanding today. He just scooped up everything. We hit a lot of balls and he was always there deep in the hole."

While Antal was cruising through the Knappa batting order, he helped his own cause with one of three Royals home runs, a 3-run shot in the fourth inning.

Aho, coming off a 5-inning no-hitter of his own against Gaston, struggled with control, walking six batters in a 3 2/3 inning stint. Antal's big blow came after back-to-back walks in the fourth.

"I think that was Antal's first hit against Knappa since his freshman year," said Miller. "He usually strikes out against us. We've just had his number."

Alex Lemieux, like Antal a 4-year starter and graduate of the perennially powerful Hazel Dell Babe Ruth program in Vancouver, got the Royals on the board with a long solo home run to lead off the second inning. After an Aho base on balls, Troy Hernandez hit a deep pop up to left field that just kept on going, clearing the fence for a 2-run homer.

While offensive highlights were nowhere to be found, the Loggers continue to get strong defensive play from junior catcher Jordan Strickland, who threw out three Royals baserunners, catching Jesse Severson twice.

"He has had an excellent last three games," said Miller. "He is really developing into the player we hoped he'd be. He threw out four guys on the day against Gaston and three more today."

While Aho's season-long hitting streak came to an end, he did record his third outfield assist of the season.

Knappa will see Clatskanie for the third time this season when the Tigers visit Teevin Field on Thursday. The game time may be moved from 4:30 to 3:00 p.m. to accomodate a junior varsity game.
