FERBER, FLUKINGER SHARE GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

The Astoria boys golf team stayed in the hunt Tuesday, but finished nine shots short of a trip to the state tournament, firing a two-day total of 674. Alex Ferber will represent the Fishermen at the 4A State Tournament, adding another medal to his collection.

Ferber and Seaside's Devan Flukinger will share district championship honors after each shot 158 over 36 holes at Quail Valley Monday and Gearhart Golf Links on Tuesday.

"This was the most competitive district tournament I've seen," said Seaside head golf coach Jim Poetsch. "After 36 holes, only 27 strokes separated first from last."

In a surprising twist, Flukinger slipped to 81 on the home course after shooting a first-day 77 at Quail Valley that had him one stroke off the pace. Ferber shaved four strokes off his opening day score to card a 77 for the best round of day two at Gearhart. The two Clatsop county golfers finished three strokes ahead of Banks' Neal Hammond and Colby Anderson of Tillamook. Anderson topped the leaderboard going into the final day of competition, but slipped to 85 on Tuesday after shooting at 76 at Quail Valley.

Scappoose's Ethan Stirling closed strong with an 80 to tie Tillamook's Nathan Bentham for fifth place with a two-day 163. The Indians won the team title by two strokes over the Cheesemakers with a score of 663, 11 strokes ahead of third place Astoria. Seaside finished fourth at 689 and Banks finished with 690.

Craig Folgner tied for ninth place with a 168 to earn all-league honors, while Astoria's John Natividad dropped his scored for the fifth consecutive competition to finish in 11th with a 169. Evan Jiroudek of Seaside just missed the top ten with a 171.

"I'm extremely proud of this team," said Foss. "They fought to the end and came up nine strokes short over two days to get to their season goal."

"They can hold their head up high for a tremendous run."

The 4A state boys golf competition will be on this side of the mountains at Stone Creek in Oregon City.
