LOWER COLUMBIA 11'S WIN, 12B'S FALL TO W. LINN
The Lower Columbia 11-year-old Cal Ripken All-Star team picked up its second win of the summer, defeating Dallas 6-3 in the opening pool game of the North Oregon State Tournament at Naselle H.S. today.
Sam Scrabeck, pitching in his hometown, struck out eight batters in three innings to pick up the victory on the mound.
L.C. pushed four runs across in the second inning and never trailed.
Nick Strange finished the final three innings on the mound. Down 5-1 going into the fifth inning,
Dallas scored two runs and had the tying run at the plate when Strange struck out Marcus Cortez to end the inning and finished off the game with a hitless sixth.
Lower Columbia plays West Linn's 12B team tonight at 6:00 p.m. at the high school. West Linn defeated the Lower Columbia 12B team 10-6 in a game at Lions Park this afternoon.
Lower Columbia scored four runs in the first two innings without a base hit and held a 4-0 lead until the fifth inning, when West Linn loaded the bases with nobody out on two walks and a hit batter and went on to score seven runs in the frame.
Matt Miller had an RBI single in the fifth and added a 2-run home run in the sixth inning as West Linn extended its lead to 10-4.
Lower Columbia rallied in their final at bat when Chandler "Bob" Chapman drew a leadoff walk and scored on an error and Bernardo Martinez added an RBI double to score Tony Rudolfi.
Three West Linn pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts as Mitch Mondor fanned Carson Whisler for the final out of the game. Whisler started on the mound for L.C. and pitched three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and three walks with a pair of strikeouts. Chad Andring ran into control problems in the fifth inning and was charged with the loss.
Lower Columbia continues pool play with a game against West Linn 11 this afternoon.
Seaside dropped out of the tournament. The schedule has been adjusted and two teams will be picked for a 6:00 p.m. championship game based on round robin results. Both teams will qualify for the 12A State Tournament at Dallas next weekend.
