WARRIORS OVERCOME STRANG, CHEESEMAKERS

Billy Sturgell doubled and scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning on a Josh Wheatley squeeze bunt as the Warrenton Warriors defeated the Tillamook Cheesemakers 8-6 in the league half of Thursday's Oregon Junior Baseball doubleheader.

Tillamook's J.T. Strang had tied the game at six with a two-run home run before Warrenton rallied for two runs in the seventh.

Michael Moore went the distance on the mound to record his fifth win of the summer against no losses. Brandon Slaughter went 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

"Michael was alternately good and bad," said Warrenton head coach Lennie Wolfe. "For some reason, he couldn't keep the ball outside against Strang. He did a great job of locating against the rest of the lineup."

Strang continued to feast on Warrenton pitching in game two of the doubleheader. After two doubles and a home run in three at bats in game one, Strang homered twice and added his third double in the second game. However, Warrenton rolled up an 8-1 lead early in the game and was able to hold off a 5-run Tillamook rally in the seventh, centered around a grand slam by Strang.

"[Strang] and [Billy] Zimmerman [Rainier 1B] more than any two kids I can remember will be sorry to see us go," said Wolfe. "No one has owned us like this ever. Not even close! [Strang]made us pay every time. We were not trying to throw him strikes."

Strang now has 12 hits, nine for extra bases, in four games against Warrenton this summer.

Freshman Reese Johnson recorded the complete game victory, holding the Mooks to single runs in the first and sixth innings before Tillamook's 5-run outburst in the final frame.

Billy Sturgell went 3-for-4 and Billy Kerr and Kevin Moore each had two hits in game two for the Warriors, who are off for a week before taking on Knappa at home July 12.
