TIGERS POUNCE IN THIRD QUARTER TO DEFEAT KNAPPA
One thing the Knappa Loggers probably won't miss about the old Northwest League: Scott Hodges.
The Clatskanie guard torched Knappa for 34 points in a season-ending 76-50 playoff loss back in February and picked up where he left off Wednesday night, scoring 33 points and collecting seven of the Tigers' 21 steals in a 78-68 Clatskanie victory at Knappa.
Despite struggling with turnovers against Clatskanie's pressure defense all night, the Loggers led 36-31 at the half thanks to four Ryan Isom 3-pointers and an outstanding rebounding effort. Midway through the third period, the Tigers caught fire, hitting 8 of 9 field goals over a four minute span to open up a 58-48 lead with a 14-4 quarter-closing run. The Loggers closed within six on a Steven Bokor steal and fast break layup by Brian Riffe, but Hodges countered with a rebound putback basket and scored on a break set up by a Chris Reynolds steal to make it 67-57 Tigers with four minutes to go and the Tigers held Knappa off the rest of the way.
Knappa turned the ball over 33 times in the game with point guard Paul Isom struggling through a 10-turnover night, but Knappa stayed in the game with solid post defense and strong rebounding, holding the Tigers' 6-6 senior post Casey Doyle scoreless for the night. Doyle sat much of the game with foul trouble, one night after being ejected from a game against Faith Bible after receiving two technical fouls. Because the ejection is being protested, Doyle was able to participate, but was not a factor, going 0-for-2 from the field with two rebounds and four turnovers.
Four Tigers scored in double figures, led by Hodges, who went 12-for-16 from the field and 4-for-5 from three point range and led the Tigers in rebounding with six boards. Conrad Ritchie added 14 points, Andrew Mustola tallied 13 points and Chris Reynolds had six steals to go with 11 points.
Ryan Isom led the Loggers with 19 points and sophomore post Jesse Moreland added 11. Bokor was held to two points, but grabbed 12 rebounds for Knappa.
The Loggers will play their third game in four days Friday night at Ilwaco. The game will be broadcast live on SportsRadio 1230 ESPN following Blazers basketball. Knappa plays another game Saturday night at home against Scappoose.
