ASTORIA, YREKA COACHES INITIATE BORDER WAR

The Astoria Fishermen put their spotless record on the line tonight in their final non-league tune-up, but it will feel a lot different that your run-of-the-mill tuneup game.

The Fishermen, who hope to have an artificial surface of their own in the near future, will hit the turf at Eugene's Autzen Stadium tonight when they face the Yreka Miners in the second game of the California-Oregon Showdown tonight.

The idea germinated with Yreka coach Orlyn Culp and Astoria head coach and A.D. Howard Rub, whose teams have both participated in Gold Beach's popular football camp the last few summers. Although Astoria did not attend Gold Beach this year, the teams roomed together at OSU football camp, when the coaches decided it might be a good idea to stage a border war event at Reser Stadium.

Astoria's original schedule had a road trip to Central High School in Independence this week, while Yreka was due to play Sutter High School of Yuba City. Instead, the teams swapped opponents and moved the game to a neutral site, Oregon's premier football facility, when the folks in Corvallis were not welcoming.

Astoria alumnus Dan Williams, an athletic assitant to the president, was instrumental in promoting the idea to the Ducks athletic department and has also generously arranged a get-together at the exclusive Stadium Club for invited Fishermen fans and family members.

The doubleheader begins at 6:00 p.m. with 2-1 Central taking on 3-1 Sutter. Then Astoria faces the 3-1 Miners, who feature one of the Northern California section's top running backs in 5-9, 160-pound senior Steven Embury, who is averaging about 160-yards per game with nine touchdowns.

The Miners return 17 total starters from a team that went 3-7 in 2005 and are expected to contend in the Northern Athletic League. Astoria comes in ranked sixth in the latest Oregon 4A football poll and will try to run the non-league table for the first time in more than a decade with their explosive, quick-strike spread option offense, featuring sophomore quarterback Jordan Poyer, who rushed and passed for over 100 yards in last week's 28-0 win at Philomath and has accounted for 630 yards of offense and 12 touchdowns in four games. Senior running back Andy Murray is averaging 7.7 yards per carry and senior wide receiver Adam Koehnke is coming off back-to-back 100-yard games in wins over Gladstone and Philomath.

Tune in to SportsRadio 1230 ESPN for all of the live action tonight, starting just before 8:00 p.m.

DOUBLE WINNERS FOR ILWACO AT HOME MEET

Steven Berglund and Carl Jackson finished one and two in the boys race and Kelly Freese won her fifth race in six tries at Ilwaco's invitational cross country meet on Thursday.

La Center's boys and girls were the team champions, with the Wildcats boys scoring 43 points and their girls fielding the only complete team in the seven-school field.

Berglund finished the 5K course in 18:46, followed by Jackson 21 seconds behind. La Center's Devon Dykes placed third in 19:16, followed by Jordan Hutson of Rochester (19:18) and Kaj Holten of Castle Rock (19:32).

Ilwaco and Rochester finished tied for second place with 64 points. Other Ilwaco finishers included Evin LaPlatney (15th, 20:13), Robert Gibbons (20th, 21:02), Luke Jensen (27th, 21:43), Robert O'Brien (39th, 23:40) and Adam Taylor (45th, 26:44).

Freese finished 34 seconds ahead of La Center's Jami Beed, crossing the line in 21:43. Freshman Cameo Ulbricht placed seventh (24:23), with Stephanie Ryan coming in 28th (37:27).

Ilwaco heads to Stan Hedwall Park in Chehalis Saturday for the Bearcat Activators Invitational.

ASTORIA ESCAPES WITH SCORELESS DRAW

Outshot 15-5 by Scappoose on Thursday, Astoria got another outstanding performance in goal by sophomore Bug Coggins to earn a 0-0 draw with Scappoose on Tuesday. The game will not count in the district standings.

The Indians had nine shots to Astoria's three in the first half, but the Lady Fishermen had some golden opportunities to score. Lynnae Huber took a cross and fired a strong shot from about ten yards, but right at the Scappoose keeper Kasey Miller, who deflected it over the goal line. The resulting corner kick by Kristina Wilson, Astoria's second in the first five minutes of play, was punched away by Miller and cleared. Astoria had four corner kicks in the first 25 minutes of the match, but couldn't create another quality shot.

Scappoose missed a golden opportunity in the first half when forward Emily McCoy, coming off a 3-goal performance in a win over Rainier, got behind the Fishermen defense. McCoy's shot went just inches wide of the left post into the side netting. Coggins had a great save of another McCoy shot at the 25-minute mark. The senior forward had seven shots in the match, but came away scoreless as Coggins recorded seven saves.

Astoria played without sophomore forward Charlene Harber, who sat out due to a hip flexor strain suffered in the first half of the Seaside match. Her athleticism was missing as the Fishermen forwards failed to spark much of an offensive threat after the opening 20 minutes.

Astoria did get another strong performance from its defense, in particular 4-year letterwinner Janae Poe, who snuffed out several potential Scappoose attacks.

Astoria, now 2-3-1 overall, hosts Montesano in a non-league match Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

BANGED UP FISH PRESS ON

Astoria added one missing member to its lineup, but was still without four starters Thursday. Still, the Fishermen were able to overcome a physical, confident group from Scappoose, defeating the Indians 2-0 to improve to 6-0 in Cowapa League play and 7-0-1 overall.

John Heick returned to the field to help bolster the banged up defense, which will have to do without sophomore stopper Alfredo Garcia for the remainder of the season. Garcia will be in a cast for two months after breaking his leg in the first half of Saturday's 1-1 draw with 2nd-ranked Hidden Valley.

Still missing are all-state forward Kevin Speer (undetermined knee injury, MRI postponed to next week but off crutches and moving well), honorable mention all-state goalkeeper Gabe Davis (quadriceps tear, seeking second opinion, still on crutches) and senior defender/midfielder Steven Wentworth (concussion, returns on Tuesday).

That would be a critical loss of talent for most any team, but Astoria is not most any team this year. The depth of talented players on this year's Fishermen squad is unparalleled.

Senior midfielder Josimar Macareno, who will get consideration for state player of the year, put the Fishermen on the board with a gorgeous goal in the sixth minute, a balletic flying volley at the far post on a long distance cross by Brause.

Christoph Mundt converted the second Fishermen goal later in the half. The Indians were up to the challenge against the top-ranked Fishermen, getting a couple of quality shots and keeping the game scoreless in the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Mathre recorded his first varsity clean sheet in the shutout.

Astoria will have some much-needed time off before hosting Tillamook on Wednesday.

TILLAMOOK TIES SEASIDE

The Seaside Seagulls find themselves in an unfamiliar place this morning-tied for last place in the Cowapa League boys soccer standings.

The fledgling Tillamook Cheesemakers earned a 1-1 draw against the Gulls yesterday at Tillamook, showing the Mooks are ready to compete in their first year of varsity boys soccer. Meanwhile, the Gulls continue to struggle with a young roster sapped of talent.

Tillamook scored first on a rebound goal off a Julian Alcarez free kick in the 16th minute that squeezed through the Seaside wall.

The Gulls were able to answer ten minutes later when Leo Luna drew a foul in the box and Chris Senick converted the resulting penalty kick.

Seaside got deep in Tillamook's end on a number of occasions in the second half but couldn't create a score. John Morgan made one tough save in the second half to preserve the tie.

The Gulls are on the road for two games next week.

GULLS LOSE SENIORS, FALL IN THREE

A young Seaside volleyball team got a lot younger Tuesday night.

Taking on Astoria for the second time this season, the Gulls lost a competitive first game, then lost their only two experienced varsity players to injuries on the way to a 25-17, 25-9, 25-8 loss to the Lady Fishermen.

Astoria improved to 6-0 in league and 7-0 overall and has won a remarkable 18 out of 20 individual sets played in league play and 28 out of 32 overall this season.

The Gulls were right with the Lady Fishermen in the first game, but were hurt by six errant serves. The shaky serving continued into a slow-starting game two before senior middle hitter Meagan Macomb went down with a sprained ankle.

"We continued to play hard," said first-year Gulls head coach Mitch Ward, "but we missed Meagan's block."

"The third game started like the second and then Becca Weaver, our other senior middle, went down with a knee injury and couldn't finish the match. We continued to play tough but we had young players in positions they weren't used to and with only one experienced blocker and both middles out Astoria put the ball down."

Astoria took advantage of a number of Seaside errors to score and had a balanced offense led by Sophie DeWitt (5 kills) and Wendi Agalzoff (4 kills). In firm control by the middle of game two, the Fishermen were able to rotate their bench into the game.

"The first game we just weren't as sharp and crisp as we normally come out," said Astoria head coach Angee Hunt. "They came out a little more fired up in the second game and it carried over into the third game. It was a good night for the most part."

Astoria hosts Scappoose Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.

LOCAL VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP

La Center def. Ilwaco 25-13, 25-15, 25-20...Shaky serving and the loss of Amber Stanley cost the Lady Fishermen in a loss at La Center.
Warrenton def. Vernonia 25-9, 25-14, 25-12...Ashley Poole had six kills and Emily Ogren added five. Justine Marxer served a perfect 23-for-23 while Lesleyanne Hayward converted 22 of 23 serves while hitting 17-for-20. The Warriors improved to 5-1 overall with the victory and 2-1 in Lewis & Clark League play heading into Thursday's game at Catlin Gabel.
Portland Christian def. Knappa 25-10, 25-17, 25-10...The Lady Loggers played competitively against the Royals despite giving up size all around the court. Knappa plays at Nestucca Thursday.
Naselle def. North Beach 25-12, 25-17, 25-12...Ashley Ahlstrom served six aces and Sylvia Herrold pounded 17 kills as the Comets improved to 5-0 heading into Thursday's non-league game at South Bend.

BANGED UP FISHERMEN EDGE YAMHILL

Missing five starters, Astoria still dominated its boys soccer match at Yamhill-Carlton, but needed a late penalty kick to notch the deciding goal in a 2-1 Cowapa League victory.

With the win, the top-ranked Fishermen improved to 6-0-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in Cowapa League play but enthusiam is tempered by mounting injuries.

Already without forward K.J. Speer and defender Alfredo Garica, both with potentially season-ending injuries, the Fishermen added honorable mention All-state senior goalie Gabe Davis to the injured reserve.

Davis, already hampered by a bruised thigh suffered against Wilsonville, aggravated the injury in a fall on Sunday and is now on crutches with what has been preliminarily diagnosed as a torn quadriceps muscle. His immediate status is unclear pending results of an MRI. Speer is scheduled for an MRI today to determine the extent of damage to his right knee. Garcia suffered a broken tibia in the first half against Hidden Valley. Depending on the nature of the break, the sophomore stopper could potentially return by Astoria's first playoff game.

The Fishermen scored first when Kyle McMullen finished off an assist from Josimar Macareno in the first half. After Y-C tied the score, the Fishermen had numerous shots on goal in the second half, but the Tigers junior goalkeeper, Greg Slater, preserved the tie with one save after another.

Astoria was finally able to break ahead late in the second half when Mathias Brause, a defender playing forward, drew a foul in the penatly box, leading to Macareno's game-winning PK.

Astoria had 20 shots in the second half, 12 on goal.

The Fishermen play Scappoose Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in the second game of a doubleheader, beginning with the girls match at 4:00 p.m.

SCHOOL RECORD FOR ILWACO BOYS GOLF

The Ilwaco Fishermen defeated the La Center Wildcats 153-179 in a boys golf dual match at Surfside on Tuesday, setting a school record low score for nine holes.

Jack Whealdon carded a 2-under-par 34, topping teammate Adam Bundy by three strokes for medalist honors. Todd Oakes contributed a 40 and Tyler Johnson completed the scoring with a 42.

"The kids really played well," said Ilwaco head coach Dan Whealdon. "It was obviously some great weather and the course was in great condition and the kids were all excited."

Tanner Roggenkamp led the Wildcats with a score of 43, trailing all of Ilwaco's scoring golfers on the day.

Ilwaco's next competition is at Beacon Rock against Stevenson on Friday.

SEASIDE SLIPS PAST ASTORIA

Laura Romine's goal in the 79th minute of play broke a 1-all tie and gave the Seaside Seagulls a 2-1 girls soccer win over the Astoria Lady Fishermen Tuesday night.

The Gulls (5-2) led 1-0 until the 57th minute, when a long distance free kick by Astoria's Kristina Wilson got loose in a crowd of players in Seaside's penalty box and was nudged into the goal. Hannah Alley was the closest Astoria player to the ball.

The Gulls dominated possession for the most part and had a 14-5 edge in shots, including numerous opportunities in the final minutes before Romine's game-winner.

"I was really excited about our offensive play," said Seaside head coach Dave Rouse. "Sarah and Laura and Marla and Selah...they just did a tremendous job. They kept fighting and fighting until we got that goal."

Sarah Weber found Romine in the box and the senior forward played the ball to the right of the goal before sending a strong diagonal shot back toward the far post for the deciding goal.

Astoria goalkeeper Elizabeth "Bug" Coggins, a sophomore in her first year of soccer, made four saves in the first half, three of the spectacular variety.

"Bug had just a phenomenal game," said Astoria head coach Jim Flint. "She's demonstrating why she's our starting goalkeeper on varsity. She kept us in the game."

The Gulls did score on their first shot attempt in the fifth minute of play, when Patricia Doyle played a ball back from the goal line to Selah Meyer, who lofted a perfect shot from 25-yards out on the right side into the upper left-hand corner out of the reach of Coggins.

"I want Selah to do that more often," said Rouse. "She has a great shot. We need to be able to pull some shots from outside."

Seaside outshot Astoria 6-2 in the first half with five of the shots on goal. Astoria's two shots were high quality: a free kick off the crossbar by Wilson in the 16th minute and a throughball run up the middle in the 37th minute with sophomore Melissa Law forcing Seaside's sophomore keeper Becca Lent to the ground to make a save. The Gull defenders appeared to be concerned about keeping Astoria's Charlene Harber off the ball, allowing Law to sneak in the back door and get a shot off.

"We have to look at those kinds of things and mark up," said Rouse. "There were a couple of things we tried to adjust today and the girls didn't really catch on to as well as I want. But we're going to work on it because we're going to see other teams like this."

Law also made a saving tackle in the second half, preventing Romine from getting a free run at the goal by closing from behind to tip the ball away from the Gulls' senior forward.

Just one minute before the deciding goal, Gull freshman April Cockroft broke free unimpeded up the middle on a pass over the top but her first touch on the ball was long, allowing Coggins to come up and stop the play.

Astoria's Wilson, a tall junior midfielder, was their best offensive weapon on set pieces with the speedy sophomore forward Harber sidelined much of the match. A Wilson corner kick in the 8th minute bounced twice across the Seaside goal mouth untouched less than six feet in front of the goal, but nobody from Astoria could get a foot on it. Another corner kick in the second half nearly went directly into Seaside's goal, as Lent bobbled the ball before it was finally controlled.

Wilson's free kick off the bar in the 16th minute was precipitated by a foul, as Harber was taken down from behind on a run up the right sideline by Gull defender Brittany Cave. Harber remained down for more than a minute before walking off under her own power and did not return until end of the half, then sat out the first twenty minutes of the second half.

"I think you're going to see a lot of classic Seaside-Astoria games," said Gulls head coach Dave Rouse, "and we're probably not going to win them all. But we're going to try."

The Lady Fishermen, now 2-3 overall, host Scappoose on Thursday in a doubleheader. The girls varsity game starts at 4:00 p.m. with the boys varsity starting at 6:00 p.m. Both games will be played at the lower field at the LCYSA Complex. Seaside travels to Rainier for a 4:15 p.m. game Thursday.

In other District 1 girls soccer action...Scappoose's Emily McCoy recorded a hat trick as the Indians blanked Rainier 5-0, Catlin Gabel picked up its first win of the year with a 2-0 win over Yamhill-Carlton and O.E.S. topped Valley Catholic 2-1 in the first meeting of the teams expected to contend for the district title.

NORTH-SOUTH SOCCER SHOWDOWN A DRAW

In a rematch of last year's 3A state quarterfinal game, Astoria and Hidden Valley played to a 1-1 draw at Tualatin Hills Parks and Recreation Complex Saturday.

The non-league game pitted two of the state's top-ten teams against one another, with Astoria coming in unbeaten and top-ranked while the only blemish on Hidden Valley's ledger was a tie against defending 4A champion Ashland.

The Fishermen struck first, stinging the Mustangs on a corner kick in the second minute of play. From the right corner, senior midfielder Josimar Macareno served it deep in the box where 6-4 sweeper Mathias Brause was able to volley it in from the far post.

The two teams played a relatively even first half, with both getting six shots and both keepers making two saves. Most of Hidden Valley's shots came from distance and neither keeper was forced to make a significant effort.

Trouble began to develop for Astoria, though, about midway through the half. Already missing top forward Kevin Speer with a knee injury suffered late in the Seaside match Thursday, the Fishermen lost two more key players. Midfielder Michael Price, a heralded transfer from Arizona, pulled himself from the game and was later seen vomiting outside the field. Then, in the 35th minute, central defender Alfredo Garcia went for a hard tackle and ended up writhing in pain on the ground. After several minutes down, Garcia was carried to the sideline. Price would return later in the second half, but Garcia was done for the day.

The Mustangs turned up the pressure in the second half, beginning with a flurry of shots by junior midfielder Taylor Willie, a returning all-leaguer. At the 51 minute mark, the Mustangs ran a beautiful overlap down the right flank, with midfielder Corey Dean serving a cross to Willie, who got a strong shot off from about 15 yards, but right at Davis who punched it away.

Five minutes later, Astoria had an attack opportunity. Macareno, who played an outstanding all-around match, carried the ball down the left sideline nearly three quarters of the way down the field and eluded two tackle attempts before finding Christoph Mundt. The German midfielder, playing forward in Speer's absence, got a shot away but across the goal mouth wide right. Minutes later, midfielder Kyle McMullen fought through a hard tackle to get a close-range shot away, but Hidden Valley's sophomore keeper Austin Smith was able to make the tough save.

Hidden Valley was led by a pair of dangerous senior strikers, with honorable mention all-state Steve Shafer and returning all-leaguer Joe Guevara displaying a high level of skill and athleticism, particularly Shafer, who was relentless in attacking Astoria's goal despite only getting off three shots in the match.

It was Shafer who set up the equalizing goal in the 63rd minute. Man-marked in the penalty box by Astoria's Oscar Carriere, Shafer got free to receive a long pass, worked the ball to the outside, then sent a strong cross to the far post where forward Chris Chapman angled a volley back across the goal mouth to the right side netting, a gorgeous goal.

The Mustangs threatened to add another score on a pair of free kicks. Justin Nielsen sent a ball into the box that Brause was able to clear in a scramble while the goalie Davis and Hidden Valley's Dean ended up in a clinch in front of goal. Then, in the 72nd minute, Brause was called for a foul just inches outside the penalty box, giving the Mustangs a free kick directly in front of Astoria's goal. The shot caromed into the wall, and a rebound shot trickled wide right where Davis was able to scoop it up.

Astoria had one more scoring opportunity at the end of the match. Mathias Brause took a throw deep in Hidden Valley's end, tossing it into the box where it was touched away and controlled by Smith just seconds before the final whistle.

Astoria (5-0-1) returns to league play Tuesday at Yamhill-Carlton. The Fishermen, despite the injury losses, are expected to run the table the rest of the season against the Cowapa League, likely taking an unbeaten record into the playoffs. The immediate future of Speer and Garcia is unknown, pending doctor's examinations this week.

FISHERMEN FIRST AT NORTH MARION TOURNEY

Fifth-ranked Astoria defeated 3A power Willamina 25-17 in a single-game championship to take first place at its first tournament of the season.

"It was a good game," said head coach Angee Hunt, whose team is 6-0 in dual matches this season. "We kind of came out fired up from the beginninng and stayed on top to the end."

In nine total games (sets) played, Astoria won seven and lost two. The Lady Fishermen had to fend off three match points to come from 24-21 down to defeat Blanchet 27-25 in the semifinals.

Astoria went 4-2 in pool play, but took second by one point behind Gladstone after splitting a pair of games against the Gladiators 25-23, 22-25. Astoria also split with Blanchet 20-25, 25-13 in pool play before dispatching the 2A Cavaliers in an exciting semifinal game.

Astoria swept Cottage Grove 25-16, 25-12 in their first pool matchup. The Lady Fishermen opened bracket play with a 25-9 dusting of North Marion. Willamina defeated Gladstone 25-8 in the semis before falling to Astoria in the championship.

Astoria has won 25 out of 29 total sets played this year. The Lady Fishermen begin their second run through the Cowapa League with a home game against Seaside Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.

Nestucca Tournament...Nestucca defeated Warrenton 25-17, 27-25 in the championship game. No other details were reported.

ILWACO WINS GOLF INVITATIONAL AT SURFSIDE

The Ilwaco Fishermen took first place at their own 5-team invitational on Saturday with a team score of 324, 24 strokes ahead of second place Stevenson.

Ilwaco's Jack Whealdon was tournament medalist with a 77, two strokes ahead of teammate Todd Oakes. Stevenson's Tyler Nielson took third with an 80, followed by another Ilwaco golfer, Tyler Johnson with 81.

"Tyler Johnson was a great surprise," said head coach Dan Whealdon, whose Fishermen host La Center in a dual match on Tuesday. "It was the lowest competitive round he's had."

"An east wind blew, which was a little different at Surfside. It threw them off a little bit."

After Tuesday's match with La Center, which placed fourth with a score of 370, behind R.A. Long (353) and ahead of Northwest Christian (380), Ilwaco travels to Stevenson for a dual on Friday, then on to Heron Lakes for the 17-team Prairie Invitational on Saturday.

CLOSE, BUT FIRST WIN ELUDES ILWACO

The Fishermen put up a valiant effort, but fell just shy of recording their first victory of the 2006 football campaign, dropping a tough non-conference tilt to Ridgefield, 19-14 at Peterson Field Friday night.

In a first half that showcased both defenses, Ilwaco jumped to the advantage late in the second quarter when freshman sensation Rey Sanchez stepped in front of a screen pass from the Spudder's QB Sean Jung and gave Ilwaco great field position in Ridgefield territory with just over 2 minutes left in the first half.

The Fishermen pounded the ball down the field, punching it in from 6 yards out on the legs of Eddy Knick with just :12 remaining in the first half. With the two-point conversion pass completion from Jake Nesbitt to Jordan DeSimone, the homestanding Fishermen took a 8-0 lead to the break.

That lead grew to 14-0 midway through the 3rd quarter, when Knick again scored, this time taking the pitch from Nesbitt, stiff-arming a Spudder defender, and racing down the sideline 53 yards for the score. The two-point conversion failed, but Ilwaco had high hopes and a two touchdown advantage.

But the Spudders came roaring back, helped by three Ilwaco fumbles. The first turnover led to a 7-yard scoring strike from Jung to Tim Horne. The Fishermen blocked the extra point and still held the lead, 14-6 with 4:16 left in the 3rd quarter.

The second Ilwaco fumble also led directly to points for Ridgefield, with George Chechelnitskiy on the receiving end of a Jung pass from 20 yards out on a 3rd down and goal to go for Ridgefield. With the two-point conversion try failing, Ilwaco clung to a slim 14-12 lead heading into the 4th quarter.

The Fishermen defense was running out of gas, however, and Ridgefield took advantage, as RJ Kuehl scampered 20 yards on a sweep with just under 8 minutes to go in the game for the final touchdown for either team.

Ilwaco was led on the ground by Eddy Knick with 21 carries for 123 yards and both Fishermen touchdowns. Nesbitt had a solid game at quarterback, going 10-16 for 104 yards with 1 interception as Ilwaco gained 247 yards in offense. Ridgefield was led by Jung, who completed 8-11 for 109 yards with 2 TD and 1 INT. The Spudders garnered 224 yards in total offense.

Next up for Ilwaco is a Trico Conference matchup with La Center at Peterson Field. Join us for all the action on KAST AM 1370 this Friday night at 6:50 p.m.

FISHERMEN STREAK TO 4TH STRAIGHT WIN

Jordan Poyer rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another and Adam Koehnke topped the 100-yard mark in receiving for the second straight game as Astoria blanked Philomath 28-0 Friday night.

Held without a first down in the first period, Astoria's offense clicked into gear on its third drive of the night, scoring in typical fashion...very quickly!

After a Justin Tikkala interception gave the Fishermen the ball at their own 11-yard line, Poyer found Andy Murray for an 8-yard pass completion. On the next play, the sophomore quarterback ran an option play to the right side, got around the corner and was gone, 81-yards to the end zone. Poyer launched himself to the pylon to complete the run as Philomath's speedy cornerback Cody Patterson was bearing down on him from the opposite side of the field.

The Warriors were able to move the ball on the ground during the game, but costly penalties kept them from threatening the end zone. Junior running back Matt Hill was a workhorse, carrying 28 times for 75 yards, but a loss of composure by Hill hurt his team on Philomath's next drive. Hill shoved Nick Alfonse to the ground after being tackled on a 2-yard run. Three officials in the vicinity all threw flags Instead of 3rd down and 9, the Warriors faced 3rd and 24 after the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. A pass fell incomplete when Justin Tikkala made another fine defensive play, hammering Philomath receiver Kory Gunter as he tried to catch the ball.

The Fishermen drove 70 yards in five plays after receiving the punt, capping the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run by Poyer, set up by a 31-yard run by Murray on the previous play.

Receiving the second half kickoff, Astoria took just two plays to score again, when Koehnke caught a slant pass and beat the safety, outracing the Philomath defense 61 yards to the end zone.

The game would be decided on Philomath's next drive. After a 66-yard kickoff return by Patterson down the left sideline, the Warriors drove inside the Astoria 10-yard line. On third down and five from the six, Astoria was called for holding, giving the Warriors half the distance to the goal, but no first down. Hill was stuffed for no gain by Nathan Stinnett on the next play and on fourth and two, Murray caught the quarterback Haynes for a 1-yard loss on an option keeper. The frustrated Haynes, a sophomore, lost his cool and was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after a profanity-laced onfield outburst. He left the game for good and Astoria took over possession on downs, marching 81 yards in eight plays for their longest scoring drive of the season. Poyer again called his own number on an 8-yard scoring run.

Astoria shut down Philomath the rest of the way, allowing one first down. The Fishermen offense, meanwhile, had its finest night of the season, racking up 404 net yards. Poyer rushed for 117 yards on ten carries and Murray added 70 yards on nine attempts. Hans Lund saw more extended action, rushing for 51 yards on five carries.

The 4-0 Fishermen travel to Eugene's Autzen Stadium to take on Yreka, California in game two of the Oregon-California Showdown next Friday night. Central Will play Sutter High School of Yuba City in the first game at 6:00 p.m. The Astoria-Yreka game is scheduled to kickoff at 8:00 p.m.

SEAGULLS VICTORIOUS IN DISTRICT OPENER

Marla Olstedt scored in the 63rd minute of play to give the Seaside Seagulls girls soccer team a 1-0 win over Scappoose Wednesday in the District 1 opener for both teams.

Playing at a blustery LCYSA field in Warrenton, the teams played to a scoreless draw over the first 40 minutes .

"I don't think we executed every time as well as we could have," said Seaside head coach Dave Rouse. "We certainly had opportunities where we could have scored."

"I though the first half we had fairly good control of the game, but we were going against the wind. That's a disadvantage, but I thought we attacked well."

Sarah Weber had two attacking runs early in the second half, forcing a save by the Indians keeper on the second run. After Olstedt scored in a crowd, the Gulls had several other close attempts.

"We had a real nice header by Jordan Betzer," said Rouse, "I think off a corner kick, just barely missed the outside post. So that was a good sign too."

Scappoose's main threat is forward Emily McCoy, who kept Seaside's sophomore goalkeeper busy.

"I didn't expect her to be as strong as she was," said Rouse. "She's definitely improved since last year. The rest of the team plays good soccer."

The loss dropped Scappoose's overall record to 3-2, while Seaside improved to 3-2 overall heading into Tuesday's showdown against 1-2 Astoria.

"They've got a win under their belt," Rouse said of his Clatsop County rivals. "They always come ready to play us. We always come ready to play them. It should be a pretty good game.

"Their coach has instituted some new stuff and they've got some good young players."

Tuesday's match, the first of two district counters, is scheduled to kick off at 6:00 p.m.

SCAPPOOSE SHOCKS SEASIDE ON LATE GOAL

Brian Maloney's rebound goal with seconds of extra time remaining in the match gave the Scappoose Indians their first win of the season, and possibly their first ever victory over Seaside.

Maloney's winning shot was the third try at goal on an attack that began with a defensive breakdown in the waning seconds, as the Gulls fell 2-1 for their third consecutive loss.

Scappoose had tied Seaside in three of the last four meetings of the two teams, but had never beaten the Gulls until yesterday.

"We aren't good enough to overlook anybody," said Seaside head coach Jon Broderick. "We don't look that good. We give up easy goals. We have great struggles in defense. Our last two matches we gave up goals in the first 90 seconds."

Exploiting a passive Seagulls defense, the Indians' Tony Lopez got a close range shot away that Gulls goalkeeper John Morgan deflected on a diving save. With the keeper out of position, senior Morgan VonPopenheim fired a second shot that was headed clear by Seagull defender Will Clark. The third try was a charm as the ball rebounded to Maloney who sent it into the back of the net.

"Our boys were pressed quite forward trying to get a goal there," said Broderick of the game-deciding goal, "but still help needs to come. We're only going to save it so many times against a numbers in and numbers down situation like that. That was a nice finish for Scappoose."

Already past the 80-minute mark in the match, the referee's whistle blew less than 30 seconds following the ensuing kickoff and the Indians celebrated one of the biggest victories ever for its perennial cellar-dwelling boys soccer program.

"Sooner or later you're going to swallow this pill if you coach long enough. It's a tough one for our team to swallow. Harder for me. They're only here for three years. I've been here for 15 years and we've never lost to Scappoose like this," said Broderick.

When asked for comment, a stone-faced Scappoose coach Bob Deuker replied curtly that he doesn't talk to the press because, "they don't print what I want."

Seaside led 1-0 at the half, with Chris Senick muscling his way into the Indians box in the ninth minute to score.

The Gulls outshot Scappoose 5-4 in the first half and missed a golden opportunity on a counterattack following an Indians free kick. Alec Carlson made a strong run up the left side and sent a pass across the goal mouth about five yards in front of the Indians goal, but no one was able to put a boot on it.

Scappoose had the majority of the looks in the second 40 minutes, tying the game at one when VonPopenheim took a long ball assist about 15 yards in front of the Seagulls goal and, with defender Ben Meyer in his hip pocket, angled a low shot past Morgan.

The Indians got 11 shots in the second half, seven of them within the goal frame. Seaside only managed three shots, forcing one save by the Indians keeper. The Gulls did mount an organized attack late in the match, but a fine defensive tackle by the Indians' Sotari Boukarous, who moved from forward to defender in the second half, prevented freshman Jason Speer from getting a shot away.

With the loss, the Seagulls drop to 1-2 in Cowapa League and 2-3 overall, heading into their toughest match yet against number one-ranked Astoria Thursday night.

"We're just not a very deep team," said Broderick. "The bench isn't very fast so we ask an awful lot of four or five guys and those guys get pretty tired by the end of the game. We have six guys who don't leave the field. They've got to have some pretty deep tanks."

"The good thing is we play everybody three times, so we have a chance to win every series. By golly, it's our goal and I think we can do it, but we've got to get better knowing that these other teams are getting better at the same time. Nobody has any reason to be intimidated by Seaside High School this year."

Astoria and Seaside play the first of three regular season matches Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at the LCYSA Soccer Complex in Warrenton. It has been five years since Astoria swept Seaside in a regular season series.

FISHERMEN MAUL MOOKS

A missing coach, a late-arriving bus and a slow start were not enough to keep the top-ranked Astoria boys soccer team from winning its fourth straight match.

The Fishermen watched as Tillamook got the first shots on goal of the match, then about midway through the first half turned it on.

Kyle McMullen fired a free kick into the Cheesemaker penalty box that was deflected in for an own goal. A few minutes later, McMullen earned one, scoring off a Matthias Brause throw-in to give Astoria a 2-0 lead at the half.

Due to Tillamook's extremely narrow field, deep throw-ins might as well have been corner kicks and Brause set up Astoria's next score with a throw to the head of Josimar Macareno, who scored Astoria's third goal in the 52nd minute. Macareno tallied again nine minutes later, taking an assist from K.J. Speer who worked the ball into the corner before sending the ball to Macareno at the top of the box.

"Not a very pretty soccer game today," said assistant coach Gordon Thomsen, who coached the team in the absence of head coach Jerry Boisvert, who had a work commitment. "It was maybe 50-yards wide which cramps our style of play and doesn't allow us to exploit our athleticism. Their defense packed it in."

Astoria had a 12-4 edge in shots on goal and forced 15 Tillamook goal kicks as the majority of the match was played in the Cheesemakers defensive half of the field. Astoria had four corner kicks to Tillamook's one.

The Fishermen finally play their first home match on Thursday against Seaside at 6:00 p.m. at the LCYSA Soccer Complex in Warrenton. Astoria had a win and a tie against the Gulls last season. Seaside's last win over Astoria was in 2004, when the Gulls took two out of three games from the Fishermen.

VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP-Tuesday

Astoria 3, Yamhill-Carlton 0...at Yamhill, Sophie DeWitt recorded ten kills and Rachel Gascoigne set 26 assists as the Lady Fishermen won their fifth straight match, fourth in straight sets, to improve to 4-0 in Cowapa League heading into Thursday's first place showdown against Banks.

The young Tigers gained confidence and momentum as the game went along, coming from behind to take the set 25-23 and continuing that momentum into a hot start in game four. Lesleyanne Hayward led Warrenton with eight kills and Emily Ogren continued her strong net play with nine blocks. Marxer served 29 of 33 for the match with two aces. The Warriors head to the Nestucca Tournament on Saturday.

Charlene Harber got the Fish on the board with a goal at the ten minute mark and Astoria held a 1-0 advantage at the half. The Jills tied the game with a goal in the 53rd minute before Hannah Alley broke the tie with a score in the 60th minute of play.

FLYING FISH GLIDE PAST GLADS

The Astoria Fishermen are positive proof that stats often don't tell the whole story.

For the third consecutive game the Fishermen were outgained by their opponents and their offense hardly saw the field. How long does your offense need to be on the field when you score 50 points?

The Fishermen quick-strike spread-option offense was in full flower with sophomore Jordan Poyer at the controls in a 50-27 victory over Gladstone as Astoria picked up its third consecutive victory over Capital Conference competition.

The scoreboard numbers were changing almost as often as the price signs at local gas stations. The Fishermen scored 23 points in the first quarter and rolled to a 36-21 halftime lead with only 17 plays on offense. Six of Astoria's scores came after less than a minute of time elapsed on the clock, another drive took 1:22 and their longest drive lasted all of 2:18.

"It was like a pinball machine, the scoreboard was, in the first half," said Astoria head coach Howard Rub, whose Fishermen are 3-0 for the second straight season. "Unfortunately it keeps our defense on the field for a while."

Poyer, named Astoria's starting quarterback after alternating series the first two weeks with Nathan Stinnett, flourished in his first game as the full-time starter. "The Chef" was serving it up to go Friday night as the Fishermen implemented a deadly vertical passing game to what had been primarily a running attack. Poyer had three TD passes and gave future opponents a lot to ponder.

"A lot of big-play capability you can do with this stuff," said Rub, referring to Astoria's new offense, implemented primarily to take advantage of Poyer's athletic gifts. "That's really why we tried to go to it because we knew we had big play type of guys."

The speedy QB displayed a golden right arm nearly the equal of his legs as Poyer pulled up twice on option plays and fired perfect strikes deep downfield, the first connection coming late in the first quarter as he hit Adam Koehnke perfectly in stride for 52 yards down to the Gladstone 4-yard line. A late hit moved the ball to the two where Poyer ran it in for Astoria's third touchdown and fourth score of the period.

Andy Murray got the ball rolling early. A 27-yard kick return by the senior running back set up his 49-yard touchdown run on the third play of the game.

Gladstone's first series ended in a snap way over the head of punter Nick Cieloha, who tried to pick it up inside the 5-yard line but kicked it into the end zone where he was tackled by Joey Dursse for a safety. Murray returned the ensuing free kick 31 yards to the Glads' 34-yard line, but fumbled the ball on the next play as Cieloha recovered for Gladstone. It didn't take long for Murray to make up for the gaffe, as he received a Cieloha punt at the 16-yard line, eluded three tacklers, then made just about everybody in a white jersey miss on a spectacular 84-yard return for a touchdown, giving Astoria a 16-0 lead.

Not to be outdone, Gladstone's special teams ace Jordan Aldredge took a reverse from Darrell Fields on the ensuing kickoff and raced effortlessly 90-yards down the right sideline to put the Gladiators on the board. It was the 6-1, 215-pound track star's third kick return for a touchdown this season after he victimized the Yamhill-Carlton Tigers twice in an opening week loss.

After Astoria answered quickly, the Gladiators sustained a 10-play, 61-yard drive that ended with Aldredge running for a 14-yard touchdown. The teams traded three more scores before the half was up.

Poyer launched a perfect, arcing spiral to Justin Tikkala for a 32-yard touchdown. Gladstone's Mitch Foteff answered with a beautifully-thrown long ball, catching Fields in stride down the right sideline for a 44-yard touchdown. Then Astoria lopped off 67 yards in three big chunks: A perfectly timed option pitch left to Murray for 18 yards with Poyer unloading the ball three yards downfield as he was being brought down, a 20-yard pass to Koehnke followed by a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, then a 14-yard carry by Murray to the 1-yard line, where Poyer sneaked it in to give Astoria a 36-21 lead at the half.

It actually took three punts before somebody scored in the third quarter, with Poyer and Koehnke hooking up on an 18-yard shuffle pass on the third play of a 55 second, 34-yard drive set up by a shanked punt by Cieloha. Koehnke raced untouched straight up the middle. The senior wide receiver's fifth catch of the game came on a fourth down play later in the period. Poyer scrambled left then fired a 21-yard strike to Koehnke in the end zone. That made it 50-21 Astoria with 1:10 to go in the third quarter and the Fishermen cleared their bench for the final 13 minutes plus, allowing a Gladiators touchdown with four seconds left in the game.

Koehnke had a career night with five receptions for 123 yards and a pair of scores. Poyer only rushed for seven yards after flirting with the century mark the previous week in a win over La Salle, but the soph signalcaller completed 6 of 9 passes for 155 yards, an impressive 17 yards per pass attempt. Murray made the most of his handful of touches, rushing for 80 yards and a touchdown on seven carries, while racking up another 149 yards on returns. Astoria's defense sacked Gladstone quarterbacks Mitch Foteff and Taylor Taft seven times and held Aldredge, a Portland State football and track recruit, under 100 yards rushing for the first time this season.

"We spent a lot of time defending the veer this week," said Rub, referring to Gladstone's triple option offense. "And honestly, other than the one legitimate drive, the long touchdown drive that they had, we did a pretty good job defending it."

"The thing that I really enjoyed seeing, too, is how hard they are playing whistle to whistle. When we watch the film I'm pretty confident that more often than not you're going to see our guys flying around to the end and that's critical. And defensively that's critical why we've been able to be a bend, but not necessarily break [defense] because we are getting to the ball.

Through three games, Astoria trails its opponents 34-56 in first downs, has run 125 plays to 202 for the opposition and trails its opponents by more than a half an hour in time of possession, while allowing more yards to its opponents in each game. Astoria is 3-and-0, winning the most important stat of all.

The Fishermen hope to continue their momentum on the road, visiting Philomath after a successful three week stint at John Warren Field. Hear the game live this Friday night on SportsRadio 1230 ESPN with pregame coverage beginning at 6:40 p.m.

GULLS TOPPLE TAFT, NOW 3-0

The excitement continues to build for a Cowapa League-opening clash between Astoria and Seaside on October 6 that could potentially see both teams unbeaten going into the contest.

The Seaside Seagulls continued their hot start, pitching a shutout in a 21-0 home-opening victory over the Taft Tigers to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Dennis Olstedt had a pair of touchdowns and again topped the 100-yard mark in rushing, despite carrying the ball just seven times. Joey Denotta added 78 yards on five carries, with a 26-yard touchdown run to get the Gulls on the board in the second quarter. Later in the period, Olstedt found paydirt on a 40-yard run, adding a 12-yard touchdown run in the third period for the final score of the night.

"We ran the ball effectively," said Seaside head coach Dave Foust. "Some other kids stepped up and played because Ross Knutsen got kicked out. We had some kids take his spot. Joey O'Brien on offense and Kyle Truax on defense did a good job."

Both players will have to do a good job again this Friday against Newport, because OSAA rules stipulate that Knutsen will be suspended from that game because of the ejection, which followed a brief shoving match with a Taft player, who was also tossed on the first series of the game.

"It was just pushes," said a frustrated Foust. "Now they're out for two games. They could have talked to them. Both of them. But they didn't. We saw more flags in the first quarter than I've seen in two games combined."

There were 17 combined penalties in the game and few kept Taft drives alive, including a pair of roughing the kicker penalties. The Gulls also lost a fumble on the Taft 1-yard line.

Seaside's toughest test yet comes this Friday when the Seagulls host the Newport Cubs.

EVANS A ROYAL PAIN, PC 3-0

The newest Portland Christian transfer couldn't have timed his arrival much better.

Shawn Evans threw for a touchdown pass and returned an interception 35 yards for another score as the Royals defeated the Warrenton Warriors to improve to 3-0 on the season.

With Portland Christian in a position of strength at the newly aligned 2A classification, offensive MVP Charlie Antal, out with a hamstring injury, has yet to play an offensive snap this year. No QB, no problem, as the 6-3, 210-pound Evans has stepped in and been a standout on both sides of the ball in three Royal victories.

Two costly turnovers hurt Warrenton. After a long kickoff return to open the game put the Warriors in good field position, Michael O'Casey fumbled on the second play of the game, leading to a long Royals scoring drive. Evans, The Oregonian's 2A Player Of The Week last week, found John Pflaum on a ten-yard pass, the first of four grabs for 83 yards for Pflaum.

Later in the quarter, Cody Hutchin found the end zone on a 12-yard run, his only carry of the night, giving the Royals a 14-0 lead.

Warrenton tried to answer, but the Royals pressured quarterback Eric Gantenbein into a bad throw, as Evans picked off a pass in the middle of the field and returned it 35 yards straight to the end zone for a 21-0 lead.

The Warriors responded with a quick scoring drive, maybe too quick, as Gantenbein hit Dan Wolfe for a 30-yard TD toss.

"We got them off balance," said Warriors head coach John Mattila, "and went bang, bang, bang down the field."

The conversion run failed and Portland Christian still had enough time to move the ball down the field for a 37-yard Matt Larson field goal just before halftime.

The Warriors' defense stiffened in the final two quarters, holding the Royals to just a yard rushing and four completed passes.

"Defensively we came out and tried to do some things that were theoretically sound for what they were doing," said Warrenton head coach John Mattila. "But it was a change from what wwe normally do. When we went back to our base defense, we shut them down. We outthought ourselves a little too much. Our kids tried to execute but they weren't comfortable."

Warrenton could manage only one more score when Gantenbein carried in for a 3-yard touchdown and found Wolfe on a 2-point conversion pass. With only a couple of minutes remaining in the game, the Royals recovered the onside kick and were able to run out the clock.

For the second straight game, Warrenton's record-setting quarterback Eric Gantenbein struggled, completing just 7 of 18 for 96-yards and a costly interception.

"Gantenbein's not getting his feet set," said Mattila. "He's not staying in the pocket and not getting his shoulders turned. Everything's just a bit off and the ball is wobbling and hanging in the air. It can be corrected."

The Warriors outgained the Royals, including a 141-81 edge in rushing. Jorge Campos made his Warriors debut a productive one, rushing for 88 yards on 20 carries. The junior running back had missed practice due to a lack of medical clearance and other off-the-field issues.

"He didn't get his physical on time and couldn't get to the doctor," said Mattila. "He's been at practice every day but he couldn't practice so he was behind."

"He's not real big, 150 pounds, but he runs hard and is quick to the hole."

The Warriors take their longest road trip of the season this Friday, travelling to Jefferson. The teams have not played each other since the mid-70's.

VERNONIA WINS BATTLE OF LOGGERS

If Knappa could be compared to a college team, one might think of Slippery Rock.

The Loggers had trouble holding on to the football once again Friday night and Vernonia slipped away with a 38-8 victory in the battle of teams that share not only similar colors but nicknames as well.

I don't know what Slippery Rock's (College?, University?, Tech?) nickname is, but Knappa continues to emulate the spirit of their name. Seven times the K-Loggers fumbled the football on Friday and four times it ended up the V-Loggers hands, neutralizing what was actually a pretty effective rushing offense. The dropsies also crossed over into the Knappa passing game as a surefire touchdown pass bounced off the chest of a wide open receiver 15 yards beyond the last defender.

"You look at the film and you say, 'Wow, how did the game get to be that score'," said Knappa assistant coach Jeff Miller. "They [Vernonia] never really stopped the run. We stopped it with seven fumbles."

Steven Bokor scored the only Knappa touchdown of the game on a 54 yard fourth quarter run. Bokor finished with 101 yards on 12 carries.

"They stacked things up to stop Bokor," said Miller. "That was their focus and he still did fine."

Fullback Mike Fulton benefited from the defensive focus, getting 14 carries for 61 yards. The senior also had a big game on defense from his linebacker position with 10 tackles, a sack and a broken up pass.

Vernonia's sophomore quarterback Byron Schorzman threw for 160 yards and a pair of long touchdowns to Jeff Paleck. Vernonia picked up more than half of its 223 rushing yards in the fourth quarter when a quick J.V. running back, sophomore Blake Moeller, entered the game and broke off a couple of big plays, including touchdown runs of 35 and 65 yards.

"They played a different speed than we did in the fourth quarter," said Miller. "If we don't fumble, we're going to be fairly tough, but if we turn the ball over we're not good enough to overcome those mistakes."

ILWACO'S WOES CONTINUE AT ROCHESTER

Rochester's Nick Katt caught two touchdown passes and returned a fumble for another TD as the Warriors defeated Ilwaco 41-20 at Rochester in the Trico League opener for both teams.

With the loss, the Fishermen dropped to 0-3 overall, extending their losing streak to eight games dating back to last October.

Eddy Knick had another productive night carrying the football, but turnovers and fundamental breakdowns proved costly once again.

It seems to be a new bugaboo every week: big plays at the end of halftime and regulation against Wahkiakum, penalties and turnovers in an otherwise solid defensive performance at Valley and a combination of the two at Rochester.

The Warriors did not punt the ball once and rolled up over 400 yards of offense. Ilwaco, led by Knick's 149 yards on 17 carries, was able to move the ball on the ground, but Fishermen junior quarterback Jacob Nesbitt completed just one of eight passes with an interception.

A costly fumble inside the ten yard line turned into a Warrior touchdown when Katt scooped it up and crossed the goal line, giving the Warriors a 19-6 lead in the second quarter. The ensuing kickoff went out of bounds, giving Ilwaco the ball at the 35 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Knick broke free and rambled 65 yards for a score. A 2-point conversion run made it 19-14 Rochester with 9:15 to go in the half.

A defensive stop could have given the Fishermen a critical momentum swing and a chance to take the lead before halftime, but the Warriors marched down the field, scoring on a Devon Willadsen 3-yard run to take a 25-14 lead into the locker room, before pulling away with a pair of third quarter touchdowns.

Jarin Ruiz' third touchdown pass of the night went for 60 yards to Ryan Knutz. Ryan Farkas ran for a touchdown later in the quarter, putting the Warriors up 38-14. Rochester blanked Ilwaco until the waning seconds of the game, when promising freshman running back Rey Sanchez rushed for the final Fishermen touchdown, finishing with 70 yards on just six carries.

Missing their star running back Justin Eastman, out with a season-ending ACL tear, the Warriors spread the ball around effectively mixed in passing plays with a powerful ground game, as Ruiz completed 9 of 14 tosses for 188 yards.

While Knick continues to flourish, running mate Alex Martin, who topped 800 yards on the ground last season, seems to be a forgottten man. The senior running back carried just one time for seven yards.

The Fishermen are home the next two weeks but the competition gets no easier as the Ridgefield Spudders come to town Friday night for a non-league encounter, followed by a league game against La Center.
